Show Me Thy Ways

When Adam and Eve ate of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, their eyes were opened. Suddenly, they understood that they needed clothes, so they made themselves loincloths out of fig leaves. This first reaction to their newfound knowledge shows us a truth repeated later in Jeremiah. It is not in man to direct his own steps. We need God to guide us.

The first human attempt at clothing was inadequate, but God showed them better. Instead of their fig leaves (which apparently weren’t enough), the Lord gave them each a ketonet made from animal skins (*see below). Obviously, these provided for more modesty and protection.

We can end up like a lost lamb when we trust ourselves to decide what is right and wrong. We’re severely limited by our own experience and perspective. We need the Lord, with his limitless perspective, to teach us what is right.

“Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.”

When we learn from God and live according to his instruction, our “soul shall dwell at ease.” Sounds nice, doesn’t it?

*Ketonet is the Hebrew word for a certain kind of tunic, and I’ve used it to emphasize that this was a specific article of clothing. It is the word translated as coats [of skins] in Genesis 3, and it appears in other places, such as Joseph’s coat and the garments of the high priest. You can see a picture of a ketonet, as worn by an Israelite high priest, here.
