Scripture Reading

You Shall Receive Power

God warned Cain about sin almost as if it has a life of its own. Sin lies at the door and desires you. It sounds like a lion stalking prey.

That’s what temptation can feel like. It isn’t as simple as knowing right from wrong. Wrong has a way of appealing to us. But if there’s a lion stalking you in the bushes, what should you do?

First, you should step away from the bushes. Put distance between you and opportunity to do wrong. Avoid situations that bring temptation. This is wisdom and will certainly help.

Yet, God didn’t abandon us to only our own efforts. He told Cain, you will rule over sin. This promise was fulfilled centuries later, when 120 people were gathered in an upper room in Jerusalem to seek the Lord. The book of Acts describes how these first Christians received the Holy Ghost and the impact it had on their lives.

In one example, Peter stood before the Sanhedrin council and boldly declared the gospel in the name of Jesus Christ. Only a short time before this, Peter was so afraid to be associated with Jesus in front of the same men, he cursed and swore that he wasn’t a disciple.

What happened to change him between Mark 14 and Acts 4?

He received the Holy Ghost (Acts 2:1-4) and the power Jesus said would come with it (Acts 1:8). You and I can have this power, too.

When the Bible says Peter cursed and swore, it doesn’t mean that he used vulgar words. It means that he said something like, “I swear on the temple that I don’t know him, and may I die if I’m lying.” In the culture of the New Testament, making an oath like this had more significance than it does for people today.
